Crush Your Goal
Step 2. The Power of “Why”
Knowing why you want to achieve your goal is as important as the goal itself. Your “why” is your motivation, your driving force, and what will keep you going when things get tough. Learn how here.
Three Examples of Strong “Whys”
- Health Goal: “I want to be healthy, so I can be there for my grandchildren and enjoy active adventures with them.”
- Career Goal: “I want to advance in my career so I can provide a better life for my family and make a meaningful impact in my industry.”
- Personal Development Goal: “I want to learn a new language to connect with my heritage and open up new cultural experiences.”
How to Uncover Your “Why”
- Ask yourself “Why?” five times after saying your goal out loud.
- Imagine achieving your goal – how does it make you feel?
- Consider who else benefits from your goal
- Think about how you would feel if you didn’t achieve it
- Write a personal mission statement about why the goal is important
Pro Tip: Create a vision board or a daily affirmation that encapsulates your “why.” Place it somewhere you’ll see it every day as a constant reminder of what drives you. This visual or verbal cue can be a powerful motivator, especially during doubt or fatigue.
It’s not only acceptable but often beneficial to have multiple reasons driving you toward your goal. Each layer of motivation adds strength and resilience to your resolve. Your “why” is as unique and multifaceted as you are, and embracing this complexity can give you a more robust foundation for perseverance.
Consider how achieving your goal will impact you and those around you. Your success can inspire others, create positive change in your community, and even contribute to a larger purpose. This broader perspective can fuel your motivation during challenging times.
As you progress on your journey, don’t hesitate to revisit and refine your “why.” Your motivations may evolve as you grow and gain new experiences. This ongoing reflection will align your goals with your values and aspirations, ensuring your path remains meaningful and fulfilling.
